Shire Hall, Grade II listed municipal building in Taunton, England
Shire Hall is a municipal building in Taunton constructed with three stories of buff and pink bricks in English bond pattern, complemented by Portland stone elements. The structure extends with wings to the southwest and southeast, displaying nine bays across its recessed concave front in a neo-Georgian design.
The building was completed in 1935 by architect E. Vincent Harris, replacing the former Somerset County Council headquarters that could no longer meet growing administrative demands. It was designed during a period of expansion when local government needed more modern office facilities.
The entrance displays the ceremonial colors of the 6th Battalion Somerset and Cornwall, placed during a special ceremony in June 2009. These flags reflect the military heritage of the area and remind visitors of the region's connection to armed forces history.
The building underwent a major 10 million pound renovation program completed in 2020, bringing it up to modern standards while preserving its historic character. Access may vary depending on government activities, so check ahead if you plan to visit the interior spaces.
The building displays an unusual concave recession in its front facade, setting it apart from typical administrative structures of its era. This design feature creates a welcoming forecourt space and gives the structure an elegant quality despite its formal government function.
