The Pierhead Lighthouse in North Queensferry is a small navigation structure standing on a headland in Scotland. A narrow spiral staircase leads upward to a platform with views over the Forth Bridge and the water below.
Robert Stevenson built the structure in 1817 to assist ships crossing the Firth estuary. The construction played an important role in supporting shipping traffic in this busy water region.
The lighthouse reflects the maritime traditions of the region and shows how ships safely navigated the Firth of Forth. Locals and visitors recognize the structure as a symbol of the connection between the shores.
Guided tours are available from May through September, and winter visits can be arranged on request. The staircase is narrow with many steps, so visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be in reasonable physical condition.
The structure is considered one of the smallest functioning lighthouses and still displays its original lamp from the 19th century. Visitors can see how this old technology actually worked.
