The Maze

The Maze is a turf labyrinth in Bridge End Gardens featuring intricate grass pathways arranged in a complex geometric pattern that visitors walk through. The winding routes lead across maintained green space and create a structured design that requires ongoing upkeep.

This turf maze was built in the early 1800s during a period when such garden labyrinths were fashionable leisure attractions. It later received Grade II listed status, recognizing its value as a historical structure.

During its restoration in the 1980s, around 11,000 box seedlings were planted to redefine the pathways after decades of neglect. This large-scale replanting effort brought the original design back to life and established the pattern visitors see today.
