St Peter's Church, Grade II* listed church in Pentre, Wales.
St. Peter's Church is a Grade II* listed church building in Pentre with walls of contrasting pink and buff-colored brick combined with Pennant Sandstone. The structure features a prominent four-stage bell tower and sits at an elevation of approximately 171 meters.
The church was built between 1887 and 1890 by architects F.R. Kempson and Fowler on commission from Griffith Llewellyn, co-founder of the Rhondda Engine Works. The construction cost of 20,000 pounds reflected the wealth and importance of the Rhondda Valley during its industrial expansion.
The interior holds an alabaster reredos with carved niches and an original stone pulpit that visitors can see throughout the space. Stained glass windows by Dixon fill the church with colored light from both ends of the building.
Any modifications to this Grade II* listed building require Listed Building Consent from the council, with unauthorized changes subject to legal penalties. Visitors should check ahead as access and opening conditions may vary depending on the time of year.
Locals call this church the 'Cathedral of the Rhondda' because of its large size and commanding presence in the Pentre community. This informal nickname reveals how the building became a landmark that people associate with the identity of their valley.
