Machen House

Machen House is a mansion featuring purple rubble stone walls and tiled roofs, distinguished by numerous nineteenth-century brick chimneys on its exterior. The structure incorporates original four-centered arched doorways alongside a stone-vaulted basement.

The mansion dates to the sixteenth century and housed the Morgan family until the 1660s when they relocated to another estate. This transition marked a shift in how the building was used and valued.

The entrance porch displays Elizabethan design elements through its detailed stone-mullioned windows and carefully crafted doorway. These features remain visible as expressions of the period's architectural style.

The building is subject to listed status, so any changes to interior or exterior require formal consent to protect its historic character. Visitors should be aware that this protection ensures the structure remains unaltered.

The stone-vaulted basement beneath the house is among the original features from the initial construction and represents an uncommon element for its period. Such underground constructions required careful planning and specialized skill to create.
