Edinburgh, Portobello, 147 High Street, Town Hall, Category B listed building on High Street in Portobello, Scotland
The building is a neoclassical structure with dressed sandstone on the northeast elevation and a two-storey central section flanked by single-storey side wings on High Street.
The foundation stone was laid in 1912 and the building quickly became a venue for relief efforts when it welcomed Belgian refugees in 1914. It marks an important moment in the town's early twentieth-century development.
The Town Hall served as a meeting place for local community events and hosted recruitment gatherings during the early years of the twentieth century.
The building is currently not open to the public and remains in a state of restoration. Its exterior and interior features show signs of age and weathering from the elements.
The front room features a segmental-bowed rear wall with original plasterwork, while a cast-iron balustrade wraps around the twisting staircase inside. These decorative elements showcase the craftsmanship of the era when it was built.
