Kinnaird Castle, Brechin, Category B listed castle in Brechin, Scotland
Kinnaird Castle is a three-story mansion house set within an 800-acre park of mature woodlands, combining French Baronial architecture with a preserved 15th-century tower. The building sits surrounded by extensive grounds and now functions as a self-catering holiday destination.
The Carnegie family gained control of the estate in 1401, establishing it as a place of royal significance. Over the following centuries, it welcomed King James VI, Charles I, and Charles II, reflecting its standing among Scottish nobility.
The estate displays formal gardens from the 1800s, marked by a grand stairway and clipped yews that reflect refined taste of that period. The Italian statue and the overall landscape design show how wealthy families shaped their surroundings to impress.
Accommodations are available in two self-catering apartments overlooking a deer park, equipped with WiFi and parking. The property's grounds are accessible for walking, with established paths making it easy to explore the surroundings.
The estate is enclosed by a seven-mile-long park wall standing over 7 feet (2 meters) high, originally designed to contain a herd of 100 fallow deer and 40 Soay sheep. This substantial boundary reflects the historical wealth and ambitions of the property's owners.
