Brechin Castle, Category A listed castle in Angus, Scotland
Brechin Castle sits on a rock formation overlooking the River Southesk, with gardens and architectural features from multiple building periods. The structure blends elements from the 13th century with additions made during the 18th century.
The original fortress dates to the 13th century and underwent major reconstruction in the early 1700s under architect Alexander Edward. This redesign took place under the direction of James Maule, the fourth Earl of Panmure, who sought to modernize the estate.
The estate has been home to the Maule-Ramsay family for generations, and the name reflects connections to local clans. You can still sense how the place embodies the family's ties to the region.
The estate opens to visitors only during specific periods throughout the year, so check the opening days before you visit. The grounds with their gardens are easy to explore and allow for a leisurely pace.
The family received a royal convoy in 2022 when it made a brief private stop during a journey. This rare visit shows how the place still holds significance in regional affairs.
