Rose Cottage, Ruthin

Rose Cottage is a medieval hall-house in Ruthin that features timber framing, wattle and daub walls built on a stone base, and a traditional thatched roof. The building stands beside the main road between Mold and Ruthin and remains closed to public access.

The building started as a medieval residence and underwent major changes in the early 17th century when a timber chimney replaced the original open hearth. This modification reflected new standards for heating and comfort in domestic spaces during that period.

The layout shows how medieval Welsh households were organized, with preserved elements such as dais partitions and arched doorways that reveal social structures. These details give visitors insight into domestic life and how families lived in their homes during that era.

The cottage stands along the main road and is easy to spot from the street due to its distinctive traditional architecture. The building is not open to visitors, but the exterior structure and roof design are clearly visible from the road.

Restoration work around 2000 uncovered original painted plaster patterns and traces of three-light medieval windows within the walls. These discoveries revealed decorative details that craftspeople of the period used to enhance the interior spaces.
