DM Gosport, Military ammunition storage facility in Gosport, England
DM Gosport is an active military ammunition depot on the shore of Portsmouth Harbour in Gosport, England. It consists of a series of bunkers and purpose-built facilities for storing, handling, and loading naval munitions.
The site was originally built in 1855 as Fort Elson, a coastal defense position protecting the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour. From the 1920s onward, it was gradually converted into a munitions storage facility to meet the needs of the Royal Navy.
DM Gosport sits across the water from Portsmouth Naval Base, which means the two sites have worked in close connection for generations. Sailors and naval staff on both sides of the harbour have long depended on this supply chain as part of their daily operations.
The depot is an active military site and is not open to the public under normal circumstances. Anyone with a specific reason to visit should contact the relevant authorities in advance to ask about access and security procedures.
In 1950, an explosion at Bedenham Pier set off a large quantity of stored ammunition, causing severe damage across a wide area around the harbour. The blast was strong enough to shatter windows in buildings far from the site and is still remembered locally.
