Ballone Castle

Ballone Castle is a fortified structure perched on a cliff in Tarbat, Scotland, constructed with a central tower and two additional towers positioned at opposite corners. This Z-shaped floor plan creates a distinctive form that commands views across the surrounding landscape.

Construction of the fortress began in 1590 and it served as a residence for the Mackenzie family for over a century. The family's departure to a new home further south in the 1690s brought an end to its occupation during that era.

The castle reflects the life of the Mackenzie family, who made this their home and left their mark on the surrounding landscape. Visitors can sense how important this stone structure was to those who lived behind its walls.

Access is available through guided tours offered during special seasons, allowing visitors to explore the interior spaces. Parking and accessible facilities are provided, with a viewing platform offering good vantage points of the building and surrounding coastline.

During restoration, the builders used Caithness stone and installed underfloor heating, with the wet stone requiring several years to dry completely. These modern improvements show how historic structures are carefully adapted to meet contemporary standards.
