Frogmore Meadows, Natural reserve in Chenies, England
Frogmore Meadows is a nature reserve of approximately 4.6 hectares bordering the River Chess, featuring varied habitats from damp grassland to drier acidic areas. Mature hedgerows run throughout the landscape and define its structure.
The site gained designation as a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1986, establishing formal legal protection. This status marked the beginning of enhanced conservation efforts to safeguard its biological diversity.
Part of the reserve was named after Gerald Salisbury, a volunteer warden who dedicated decades to managing the site. The naming reflects how local stewardship shapes the identity of protected spaces.
The reserve can be accessed via the Chess Valley Walk, with parking available at Sarratt Bottom or Latimer. A walk of roughly a kilometer from these locations brings you to the meadow entrance.
The meadow is maintained through traditional haymaking, where grass is manually cut, dried, and baled each July to sustain wildflower diversity. This centuries-old practice remains central to its management today.
