The Horses of Helios, Bronze fountain at Piccadilly, London, England.
The Horses of Helios is a bronze sculpture of four rearing horses on a granite base at the center of a busy junction near Piccadilly Circus. Water flows around and between the powerful bronze forms, creating a dynamic interaction between the figures and their surroundings.
Created by sculptor Rudy Weller, the work was unveiled in 1992 as part of renovations at the adjacent Criterion Theatre. This artwork was installed during a major transformation of the landmark cultural building.
The four bronze horses reference the chariot of the Greek sun god and connect London's modern art with ancient stories. This classical reference sits in the middle of a busy junction, creating a contrast between mythology and everyday city life.
The work stands near Piccadilly Circus tube station, making it easily accessible for visitors exploring central London. Its location at a busy junction means the sculpture is visible from multiple angles as people move through the area.
A companion sculpture called Daughters of Helios sits several floors above and shows three golden figures appearing to leap from the building. This connection between the two works creates a subtle vertical composition that extends across the entire site.
