Dagenham Civic Centre, Art Deco town hall in Becontree Heath, London
Dagenham Civic Centre is a town hall in the Art Deco style located in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. The building displays the characteristic design features of 1930s British municipal architecture with its distinctive geometric forms and detailed exterior.
The building was designed by architect E. Berry Webber and opened in 1937 as the headquarters of the local authority. It later underwent significant renovation and was converted to serve a new educational purpose in 2017.
The council chamber incorporates walnut panels in a semi-circular layout, while the Mayor's Parlour displays Canadian betula veneer throughout its walls.
The building is now accessible to the public as part of an educational facility and retains much of its original interior design from the period. Visitors can explore the spaces and observe the quality of the materials and craftsmanship used throughout.
The interior features premium materials including Botticino marble in the stair hall, walnut paneling in the council chamber, and Canadian birch veneer in the Mayor's Parlour. This use of fine materials was typical of civic spaces designed to reflect the importance of local governance.
