Burton upon Trent Town Hall, Grade II listed municipal building in Shobnall, England
Description
Burton upon Trent Town Hall is a Grade II listed building in Victorian Gothic style located on King Edward Place with a distinctive clock tower and administrative offices inside. The structure contains the municipal departments and functions that serve the local area from within its walls.
History
Michael Thomas Bass built the structure in 1878 as Saint Paul's Institute and Liberal Club, then his son gave it to Burton Borough in 1891. This donation transformed it from a private cultural gathering place into a public administrative center.
Culture
The building houses a Wurlitzer organ from 1973, which came from the Cameo Theatre in Ohio and brings a distinctive musical dimension to the town's cultural life.
Practical
The building serves as the administrative center for East Staffordshire Borough Council and is located in the town center, easily accessible to visitors and residents. The exterior can be viewed anytime from the street, and interior access may be possible during special events or by arrangement.
Did you know?
Queen Elizabeth II visited the building on March 28, 1957, and greeted the public from its balcony, an event that remained vivid in the town's memory. This royal visit permanently linked the structure to a special moment in local history.
