Church of St Modwen, Church building in Burton, England
The Church of St Modwen is a red sandstone church in Burton, England, with a three-stage west tower topped by decorative balustrades and urns. The tower carries round windows with radial glazing bars, and the building holds Grade I listed status.
Work on the church began in 1719, with services starting in 1723 and the building finished in 1728. Three brothers from the Smith family oversaw the construction from start to finish.
The church is dedicated to St Modwen, a 7th-century nun said to have lived on a small island near Burton. Her name remains well known in the area, and this building keeps that connection alive for anyone who visits today.
It is worth checking opening times before you go, as they can vary. The interior is easy to walk through on foot, and the main features of the building are straightforward to find without any preparation.
Inside the church stands a font dating from the 15th century, alongside a 19th-century monument to Lady Fowler made by sculptor Sir Richard Westmacott. The organ retains a case from 1771 that was originally built for an instrument by John Snetzler.
