St Peter's Bridge, Burton upon Trent, Road bridge in Burton upon Trent, England
St Peter's Bridge is a modern road bridge connecting Burton upon Trent with Stapenhill across the River Trent, featuring nine spans supported by eight reinforced concrete piers. The structure handles traffic on the A5189 and provides a direct route between the two areas on either side of the river.
The bridge opened in 1985 as a response to growing traffic congestion in the area during the 1970s. It became the third road crossing of the River Trent in Burton since the early 1900s.
The structure takes its name from the nearby parish church of Stapenhill and represents the third road crossing of the River Trent built since 1915.
The bridge carries regular traffic flows and is accessible on foot or by vehicle using the A5189 road, which connects the two sides of the river. For a quieter crossing, it is best visited during off-peak hours away from morning and evening rush times.
Major maintenance work in 2017 replaced numerous bearings and upgraded the deck's waterproofing to extend the bridge's service life. This renovation was completed ahead of schedule, demonstrating the importance of maintaining modern infrastructure investments.
