Blackmoor War Memorial, War memorial cloister in Hampshire, England
Blackmoor War Memorial is a three-sided arcade with wood framing, stone walls, and a tiled roof enclosing a central courtyard. A wheel-headed cross stands at the center, surrounded by bronze plaques that serve as the memorial's focal point.
The Earl and Countess of Selborne commissioned this memorial in 1920 to honor their son Captain Robert Palmer and other fallen soldiers. Architect Herbert Baker brought his distinctive style to the design of this and other war monuments.
The six bronze plaques honor those lost in both World Wars and keep local military service members in memory. They stand within a calm place of reflection beside St. Matthew Church.
The memorial sits beside St. Matthew Church and offers a quiet setting for reflection. A water fountain and benches along the rear wall provide places to rest and pause.
The octagonal cross displays text from Psalm 58, revealing the religious importance placed on war memorials of this era. This detail shows how such places were designed as spaces for prayer and spiritual reflection.
