High Shoals Falls, Waterfall in South Mountains State Park, North Carolina.
High Shoals Falls is a waterfall in South Mountains State Park where water cascades over granite cliffs in multiple stages along the Jacob Fork River. The volume and intensity of the flow change with the seasons, creating different visual effects throughout the year.
Native American tribes hunted in this mountain region long before European settlers arrived in the area. The waterfall and surrounding lands were later preserved as a state park in the latter part of the 20th century.
The falls and surrounding parkland became protected in 1974 when North Carolina allocated funds to create South Mountains State Park for public recreation.
The falls are reached via a loop trail that includes stairs and wooden walkways leading to viewing areas. After heavy rain the path becomes slippery, so sturdy footwear is important for safe footing.
The Jacob Fork River drops more than 80 feet in just a quarter-mile stretch of riverbed, concentrating its descent into a relatively short distance. This unusually steep gradient creates the dramatic appearance of the falls.
