Aguadilla, Coastal municipality in northwestern Puerto Rico.
Aguadilla is a coastal town in northwestern Puerto Rico that stretches along the Atlantic and includes several sandy beaches and natural springs. The municipality reaches from the shoreline into the hilly interior with residential neighborhoods, an airport, and a golf course near Punta Borinquen.
Luis de Córdova founded the settlement in 1775 under the name San Carlos de La Aguadilla after the Spanish crown opened the area for colonists. Taíno groups had lived along the Culebrinas River for centuries before Europeans arrived.
The name comes from the Spanish word for water source, recalling the natural springs along the coast. Locals gather at beach promenades and parks in the late afternoon, while fishermen prepare their nets along the shore.
Rafael Hernández International Airport sits at the western edge and offers connections to other parts of the island. Many beaches are easily reached by car, while hiking trails into the interior are less developed.
Crash Boat Beach still preserves an old US Air Force pier that extends into the sea and now serves as a platform for jumping into the water. Snorkelers swim around the support pillars and watch schools of fish seeking shelter in the shadow of the structure.
