Harrisonburg, Independent city in Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, US

Located at an elevation of 404 meters, Harrisonburg functions as a central transportation hub along Interstate 81 between Richmond and Washington D.C.

Thomas Harrison established this settlement in 1779, which developed from a small town called Rocktown into an independent city by 1916.

The city reflects multiple cultures through its population of over 51,000 residents who speak 55 different languages, including Spanish, Arabic, and Kurdish.

James Madison University and Eastern Mennonite University provide higher education opportunities to more than 20,000 students within the city limits.

The Newtown district, established by freed enslaved people in 1865, represents an important chapter in the transformation of Harrisonburg's urban landscape.
