Mount Magazine

Mount Magazine is a summit in the Ozark range that reaches 839 meters elevation with steep sandstone cliffs and a flat-topped peak. The formation creates varied landscapes as visitors move from the lower slopes through to the plateau.

A French explorer named Jean-Baptiste Bernard de La Harpe documented this location in 1722 while traveling through the Arkansas River Valley. The early records helped establish knowledge of the region's geography for European maps.

The mountain attracts people interested in observing butterflies and nature in its many forms. Visitors can walk through areas where these insects thrive and experience how the place draws communities together around natural life.

The area provides camping sites with basic facilities, multiple hiking trails, and designated spaces for rock climbing and hang gliding activities. Visitors should prepare for changing weather conditions, particularly as they move to higher elevations.

The temperature here stays roughly 10 degrees cooler than in surrounding areas, creating frost flowers and freezing fog during winter months. These unusual weather patterns occur because of the elevation and location, sometimes forming visible ice crystal formations.
