Blue Mountain Lake, reservoir in Arkansas
Blue Mountain Lake is a reservoir on the Petit Jean River in Arkansas, sitting across parts of Logan and Yell counties. Five recreation areas line its shores, each with boat ramps, picnic spots, and camping facilities managed by the Army Corps of Engineers.
The dam was planned in 1940 to control regular flooding along the Petit Jean River, and construction started soon after. Work paused during World War II and resumed afterward, with the earthen dam finished in 1947.
The lake takes its name from Blue Mountain, a rocky ridge close to Mount Magazine. The surrounding land still shows traces of the farms and small communities that once stood there, visible in old clearings and field edges near the water.
Each of the five recreation areas has its own entrance and parking, so it helps to decide in advance which part of the lake you want to visit. Some areas have accessible paths and facilities, making the waterfront easy to reach for everyone.
Over 300 bird species have been spotted around the lake and its nearby wetlands, a number that draws serious birders from across the region. The forests and wetlands are actively managed to keep wildlife habitats in good condition, which explains why the variety of animals here is so wide.
