Arkansas Tuberculosis Sanatorium Historic District, Medical historic district in Booneville, United States.
The Arkansas Tuberculosis Sanatorium Historic District is a medical complex with 76 buildings spread across a large hilltop property south of Booneville. The site contains residential halls, medical facilities, and administrative structures arranged to serve thousands of patients.
The facility opened in 1910 to treat tuberculosis patients and grew steadily over the following decades. By the 1940s it had become the largest tuberculosis treatment center in the nation.
The complex functioned as a self-contained village where patients found a chapel, theater, post office, school, and library all on the grounds. These spaces gave people meaningful activities and a sense of community during months of treatment.
The grounds can be explored on foot, with buildings distributed across different sections of the property. Comfortable shoes are recommended since the terrain is hilly and distances between structures require some walking.
The Nyberg Building, completed in 1938, stretches across five stories and was once among the longest clinical buildings in the country. This massive structure demonstrates the architectural ambition of the institution at the height of its operation.
