Maple Lawn

Maple Lawn is a two-and-a-half-story red brick residence with a steeply pitched gabled roof and three chimneys. The front facade features white ornamental vergeboards with geometric piercing, characteristic of Gothic Revival design.

Architect Frederick Clarke Withers designed the house in 1859 during a period of economic growth in Newburgh. The region expanded due to river commerce and industrial development occurring at that time.

The design reflects the Gothic Revival movement, which incorporated medieval elements into residential buildings during the 1800s. Visitors can see the characteristic pointed arches and ornamental details that define this architectural style.

The house is located on Downing Avenue on a substantial property of about 1.2 acres. The location makes it easy to explore other historic sites in the area.

The house takes its name from the many maple trees that once surrounded the property until a hurricane destroyed them. This botanical history links the building to the natural landscape that once defined the site.
