Arthur Ashe Stadium, Tennis stadium in Queens, United States
Arthur Ashe Stadium is a tennis venue in the Queens borough of New York City with over 23,000 seats and a retractable roof installed in 2016. The facility belongs to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and serves as the main venue for the US Open.
The venue opened in 1997 and replaced the older Louis Armstrong Stadium as the main tournament site. Whitney Houston performed live during the opening ceremony at that year's US Open.
The venue honors the tennis player who broke racial barriers by winning the first US Open of the professional era in 1968. Visitors today see his statue at the main entrance, commemorating his influence beyond the sport itself.
Access to the venue is through several entrances around the grounds, with Gates 4 and 11 particularly suitable for wheelchair users. The movable roof closes within seven minutes, allowing play to continue during rain without long interruption.
The facility served as an emergency hospital in 2020 with temporary beds set up on the tennis courts. The following year, the venue hosted its first major wrestling event, drawing thousands of spectators to what is normally a tennis-only site.
