Crystal Lake

Crystal Lake is a city in McHenry County, Illinois, that sits northwest of Chicago and includes a dense network of green spaces, residential areas, and a commercial core. The central district combines older buildings with small shops and eateries, while the city limits stretch to the shores of the body of water that gave the place its name.

The first settlers arrived in the 1830s when a pioneer named the clear water. Two separate communities grew along the shores over several decades and merged in the early 20th century.

A large 19th-century mansion crafted by artisans from Europe stands on an expansive estate above the water. The interior holds marble fireplaces and woodwork that recall the craftsmanship of that era.
