Tallahassee State College, Community college in Tallahassee, FL
Tallahassee State College is a public college in Tallahassee that was founded in 1966 and now serves over 15,000 students each year. The 200-acre campus sits on land that was once Dale Mabry Field airport, and the old runways from that era remain visible as parking areas.
The college was founded in 1966 with classes held at Godby High School while the main campus was under construction. It was renamed Tallahassee Community College in 1970 and received its current name in 2024 to reflect its expansion.
The college serves as a meeting place for people from different backgrounds and age groups across Florida. Its sports teams, student newspaper, and clubs create a sense of community where students engage beyond classrooms.
The campus is located close to Florida State University and easy to access. There are no on-campus dorms, so students find housing in nearby residential areas that offer student apartments and shops.
The campus was built on the grounds of the former Dale Mabry Field airport, and the old aircraft runways have been preserved and repurposed as parking areas. This unusual history shows how the institution transformed a historic piece of land into a new purpose.
