Pikeville, Regional center in Pike County, Kentucky.
Pikeville is a city in Pike County, eastern Kentucky, with around 7,000 residents and sits at roughly 679 feet (207 meters) elevation. Mountains frame the streets and buildings, while the Levisa Fork River runs through the valley.
The settlement was founded in 1824 as Pike and received its current name in 1850. Coal mining brought growth and new railway connections to the region during the 20th century.
The Appalachian Moonshine, Music & Makers Festival gathers local artisans, musicians, and food vendors to celebrate Kentucky mountain traditions each year.
Downtown offers free parking and timed zones near shops and restaurants. The University of Pikeville sits at the edge of town and is easy to reach by car.
A project between 1973 and 1987 moved the river and relocated a mountain to end flooding. The work created new land for residential and commercial areas in a previously narrow valley.
