Katonah, Rural hamlet in Westchester County, United States.
Katonah is a settlement in Westchester County, New York, with residential neighborhoods and businesses along tree-lined streets near the Croton Reservoir. The streets run through gentle hills, and many houses date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
During the American Revolution the residents supported the Continental Army, though the settlement lay within the Neutral Ground. In 1897 the entire village relocated to a new site because of reservoir construction.
The name comes from a Lenape chief, Chief Katonah, who once lived in this area. Today residents from the surrounding towns visit the small shops and cafés along Bedford Road, where people often gather for shopping and walking on weekends.
The library and art museum offer exhibitions and programs that are usually open during the day. Several trails and parks lie nearby and work well for walks in good weather.
In 1897 about fifty buildings were rolled on logs and pulled by horses to a new site because the reservoir flooded the old village. Residents rebuilt their homes piece by piece, so many structures from the original settlement remain.
