Hastings-on-Hudson, Residential village in Westchester County, United States
Hastings-on-Hudson is a residential community along the eastern shore of the Hudson River in Westchester County, United States. The village stretches across a hillside with neighborhoods, small shops and parks leading down toward the waterfront.
The area was first inhabited by the Weckquaesgeek, an Algonquian group, before becoming part of Frederick Philipse's manor holdings in 1682. The community became a separate municipal entity in 1879 and developed into a commuter settlement for New York City.
The Newington-Cropsey Foundation Gallery displays paintings from the Hudson River School, a nineteenth-century American landscape painting movement. The Draper Observatory is maintained by the local historical society and opens for visits by arrangement.
The Metro-North Hudson Line station sits close to the riverfront and runs frequent services toward Manhattan. Most residential streets climb uphill from the water, so expect some walking effort when exploring the neighborhoods.
The Old Croton Aqueduct Trailway runs through the community and stretches 26 miles (42 km) from Croton Gorge Park to Van Cortlandt Park. The trail follows the route of a mid-nineteenth-century aqueduct structure.
