Estherwood, Renaissance Revival mansion in Dobbs Ferry, New York, US
Estherwood is a three-and-a-half-story mansion with white pressed brick facades, granite trim, and terra-cotta details throughout its exterior. The roof features black and red ceramic tiles, and the property includes a secondary building in Queen Anne style as well as additional structures across its extensive grounds.
The mansion was built in 1895 for industrial magnate James Jennings McComb, with architect Albert Buchman incorporating an original octagonal library into the larger design. This foundational element shaped the property's overall layout from its inception.
The Music Room displays red marble columns topped with gold leaf and features musical motifs carved into the walls and ceilings. This space reflects how wealthy families of that era valued artistic expression and entertainment in their homes.
The property sits within the Masters School campus and can be accessed from the main entrance area. Comfortable footwear is recommended since exploring both the interior and grounds involves considerable walking.
At the heart of the house lies a grand hall with an impressive coffered ceiling and skylights, from which six distinct rooms branch out. This central arrangement creates an unexpected spatial composition that gives the property its distinctive character.
