Mahopac, Suburban community in Carmel, New York, United States.
Mahopac is a census-designated place in Putnam County, north of New York City. The community centers around a glacial lake that gives the place its character and draws residents to the area.
The name comes from the Wappinger people who lived here until the late 17th century, when European settlers began arriving. Early development grew around farms established by people from Cape Cod who rented land from the Philipse family.
The Mahopac Central School District maintains five educational institutions that serve the local student population of more than 5,000 pupils.
The lake is the center for recreation and water sports with two marinas providing boat access. Visitors can find various public waterfront areas, and the community has good road connections for getting around.
The lake contains three small private islands, including Fairy Island, which together with marina facilities create a distinctive feature. From the shore, these islands give the water body a unique appearance that many visitors find memorable.
