Fishers Island, Island community in Suffolk County, New York, United States
Fishers Island is a slender strip of land in Long Island Sound, belonging administratively to Suffolk County in New York State. The settlement spans roughly nine miles and consists of residential neighborhoods, golf courses, and natural shoreline with beaches and dunes.
The Lenape people originally called the place Paggank because of the many nut trees growing there. European settlers took over the island in the seventeenth century and used it mainly for farming and fishing.
The island maintains seasonal traditions through community gatherings, local art exhibitions, and maritime activities that connect residents with their coastal heritage.
The place can only be reached by ferry departing either from Connecticut or the north shore of Long Island. Visitors should check crossing schedules in advance, as connections vary by season and day of the week.
Population numbers shift heavily with the seasons: around 300 people live here year-round, while several thousand arrive in summer. Many houses remain empty most of the year and are occupied only during the warm months.
