Avery Point Light, Lighthouse in Avery Point, Groton, US.
Avery Point Light is an octagonal concrete tower standing on the shore of Long Island Sound with a white lantern and black roof visible from the water. The structure rises about 55 feet (17 meters) and serves as a navigation marker for maritime traffic passing the area.
Built in 1943 during World War II, the tower remained unlit initially due to invasion concerns that prevented activation of navigation aids at the time. The light began operating in 1944 and has assisted maritime traffic ever since.
The lighthouse serves as a functioning navigation aid for maritime traffic and remains part of daily operations on the campus where it stands. Its role in guiding ships continues quietly, visible to visitors walking the university grounds.
The tower is located on the University of Connecticut Avery Point campus and can be viewed from the shoreline paths. Visitors should know that while the grounds are accessible, the interior may not always be open for tours or exploration.
This is the last lighthouse built originally in Connecticut, showing construction methods of the mid-20th century at the time of its design. Today it is jointly maintained by university students and Coast Guard personnel, reflecting a modern partnership for preserving navigation aids.
