Jabez Smith House, Historic house in Poquonock Bridge, Groton, United States
The Jabez Smith House is a farmhouse five bays wide with wooden shingles and clapboard siding, featuring a central chimney characteristic of colonial architecture. The structure displays typical building methods and proportions of its period and location.
The foundations date from 1663, while the house itself was built around 1783. The Smith family occupied the property until 1974, when the town of Groton became its owner.
The interior follows a traditional center chimney design with original plaster and woodwork from the 18th century visible throughout. These details show how families organized their homes and what craftsmanship meant to them.
The house is located on North Road near the Newtown Road intersection and can be easily found with basic directions. It is open to visitors on weekends during the warmer months from April through November.
It is the last remaining 18th-century farmhouse in the Poquonock Bridge area and still contains antique collections from that era. Visitors can see everyday objects and furnishings from earlier generations displayed throughout the rooms.
