The L. A. Dunton measures 123 feet in length and features a rounded bow, bowsprit, and two towering masts reaching 112 feet in height.
Built in 1921 at Story's shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts, this vessel operated in the cod and halibut fishing trade along New England's coast until 1934.
The schooner represents the traditional fishing methods and maritime practices of New England's coastal communities during the early twentieth century.
Visitors can examine the vessel's construction materials, including white oak, yellow pine, maple, and sycamore, during guided tours at Mystic Seaport Museum.
This vessel stands as one of only three remaining examples of the once-common New England fishing schooners still maintaining their original configuration.
