Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration
Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration, Marine research center and aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut, United States.
Mystic Aquarium is a research facility and public aquarium on Connecticut's coast with various marine habitats spread across its grounds. The facility displays beluga whales in outdoor tanks, sharks and rays in touch pools, African penguins, and jellyfish collections arranged throughout different areas.
The aquarium opened in 1973 with support from an industrialist who chose Mystic for its maritime heritage and coastal setting. The project grew from a focus on marine research and a desire to bring ocean science to public audiences.
The Ocean Exploration Center displays discoveries from famous research expeditions and lets visitors learn about marine science through real findings. The exhibits tell stories of underwater adventures and the people who undertook these journeys.
Visitors can interact directly with penguins and other marine animals under the guidance of trained professionals who share information about the creatures. It is wise to wear comfortable shoes and allow sufficient time to explore all areas of the grounds.
The facility is one of only two places in the United States where Steller sea lions can be seen, and the only location in New England with beluga whales. This rare combination makes it a special destination for those wanting to observe these marine mammals.
