1049 5th Avenue, Functionalist apartment building in Upper East Side, Manhattan, US

1049 5th Avenue is a 23-story brick residential building on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, positioned at the corner of 86th Street with a direct view over Central Park. The building contains 45 condominium units and was designed in a functionalist style typical of the interwar period.

The building opened in 1928 as the Adams Hotel, operating as a lodging establishment for several decades. In the early 1990s, it was gutted and converted into private residential condominiums.

The building sits directly across from Central Park on a stretch of Fifth Avenue long known as Millionaires' Row, a name that reflects the kind of residents who have lived here for over a century. Walking past the building today, you can still sense the weight of that legacy in the scale and style of the surrounding architecture.

The building is on Fifth Avenue near 86th Street, close to several museums and the eastern edge of Central Park, making the surrounding area easy to explore on foot. It is a private residential building, so access is limited to residents and their guests.

When the units went on sale in 1991, they sold at prices that were among the highest ever recorded for residential real estate in New York City at that time. This helped set a new standard for what buyers were willing to pay along this stretch of Fifth Avenue.
