Antoine LeClaire House, Historical residence in Davenport, United States.
The Antoine LeClaire House is a two-story brick building in Italianate style located in Davenport, Iowa. It contains 14 rooms with high ceilings, nine fireplaces, and an elliptical staircase that defines its interior layout.
The house was built in 1855 and replaced an earlier log cabin and Treaty House structure. It later served as the residence for two Catholic bishops of Davenport.
Antoine LeClaire was a prominent businessman whose home represents the prosperous side of Davenport's past. The rooms tell the story of a man who shaped the city's early development.
The building is located on East 7th Street and is being restored to serve as a history interpretation center for visitors. Check ahead about current conditions since restoration work is still in progress.
The interior preserves original ornamental plaster medallions that show how wealth and taste were displayed in that era. These decorations are a rare reminder of the craftsmanship that went into the house.
