Fred B. Sharon House
Fred B. Sharon House, Second Empire mansion in Cork Hill District, Davenport, United States.
The Fred B. Sharon House is a three-story brick building in Second Empire style with a mansard roof and iron cresting. The structure features rectangular windows on the lower floors, arched windows on the third story, a central tower, and a T-shaped floor plan.
The house was built in 1891 as the residence of Fred B. Sharon, a New York teacher who became a prominent businessman, newspaper publisher, and postmaster in Davenport. Its construction marked a period of economic growth for the city.
The house reflects the design preferences of wealthy merchants of its era through elaborate Victorian details. The ornate roofline with its iron cresting speaks to the family's prosperity and standing in the community.
The building stands on Farnam Street among other preserved historic structures in a residential neighborhood. Visitors can view the architecture from the street and explore the surrounding area filled with homes from the same era.
The central tower and T-shaped floor plan set this house apart from other Second Empire structures in the region. This unusual combination was relatively rare for the period and makes the building architecturally distinctive.
