Cold River Virgin Forest, Ancient forest reserve in Massachusetts, United States.
Cold River Virgin Forest is a protected woodland in Massachusetts filled with ancient hemlock and sugar maple trees, many exceeding 400 years in age. The forest contains multiple layers of vegetation and represents a largely undisturbed forest structure from centuries past.
The forest received designation as a National Natural Landmark in 1980 from the National Park Service. This recognition acknowledged the ecological importance of the site as a rare example of original forest ecosystems in New England.
The forest provides researchers and scientists with opportunities to study ancient forest ecosystems and their adaptation to environmental changes.
Contact local authorities before visiting, as access and visiting conditions may be limited to protect the forest. Portions of the area may be restricted to allow for ecosystem preservation.
This is the last remaining old-growth hemlock and northern hardwood forest left in the entire New England region. No other place in the area retains this specific forest type.
