Finch Building

The Finch Building occupies a location on Wyoming Avenue and displays Renaissance Revival features including stone construction and classical elements spanning multiple stories. The structure has been converted to residential apartments while retaining its historic external character and original architectural details.

Built in 1899, the structure originally housed the International Correspondence School, which delivered mail-based courses to miners throughout northeastern Pennsylvania. This initial purpose connected the building to the region's reliance on extractive industries and the educational programs that supported them.

The building reflects how late 1800s business districts favored Renaissance Revival design, blending European architectural traditions with American commercial needs. Today the structure stands as a visible reminder of this stylistic period in downtown Scranton.

The building is located in downtown's central area and easily accessible on foot from nearby attractions and businesses. Note that the structure now serves as private residences, so viewing is limited to the exterior of the property.

The structure takes its name from the Finch Manufacturing Company, which produced steel products including manhole covers during Scranton's industrial boom. This naming detail connects the building to specialized manufacturing that shaped the local economy over a century ago.
