Harrison Avenue Bridge
Harrison Avenue Bridge, Concrete deck arch bridge in Scranton, United States.
Harrison Avenue Bridge is a concrete arch bridge in Scranton that spans Roaring Brook and the Central Scranton Expressway. The structure features three distinct arches and extends for approximately 400 feet.
Construction took place between 1921 and 1922 under the design of engineer A. Burton Cohen. The project aimed to connect East and South Scranton while improving transportation routes across the region.
The bridge connects two neighborhoods and reflects the involvement of residents who actively shaped its development. This local participation shows how communities took charge of building their own infrastructure.
The bridge provides passage for vehicles and allows pedestrians to cross multiple transportation routes below. Visitors can best view the structure from vantage points along the riverbanks to appreciate the scale of the arches.
The central span uses four ribs in an open-spandrel design that is both structurally efficient and visually distinctive. This construction method was not yet routine for concrete bridges of that era and demonstrates engineering precision.
