Florence Griswold Museum, Art museum and historic boardinghouse in Old Lyme, United States.
The Florence Griswold Museum is an art museum and former boardinghouse for artists in Old Lyme along Connecticut's coast. The property spans 12 acres along the Lieutenant River and includes a restored 1817 house, art galleries, and gardens with walking trails.
The property became significant between 1899 and the 1930s when over 135 American artists stayed here and founded the Lyme Art Colony. This period shaped the house as a center of the American Impressionism movement.
The house displays 43 painted panels on doors and walls created by guest artists during the height of American Impressionism in the early 1900s. These works show the creative energy that filled the residence when painters came to work and live here.
Plan your visit during daytime hours, with extended opening times during the warmer months from April through December. The grounds with gardens and walking trails are easy to explore and offer plenty of space to wander.
The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company donated 190 artworks to the museum's collection in 2001. This generous gift substantially strengthened the museum's holdings of American art from that period.
