Fort Buchanan, United States Army installation in Puerto Rico
Fort Buchanan is a military base located near San Juan in Puerto Rico. The installation covers approximately 750 acres and houses various units from the US Armed Forces, including reservists, National Guard personnel, and active duty service members from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.
The base was originally founded in 1923 as a training camp and renamed Fort Buchanan in 1940. The name honors Brigadier General James Anderson Buchanan, a military leader who served in Puerto Rico following the Spanish-American War.
Visitors must present a federal ID, vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and a driver's license to obtain a visitor pass. The visitor control center operates on weekdays and Saturday mornings, and all visitors must be accompanied by their sponsor while on the installation.
Following Hurricane Maria in 2017, the base became a command center for search and rescue operations across the region. Many personnel stationed here received awards for their disaster relief efforts and played a key role in community recovery.
