Fort Mountain State Park, State heritage park in Chatsworth, US.
Fort Mountain State Park is a protected area near Chatsworth that stretches over steep slopes with hardwood forest, mountain paths, and a small mountain lake. The park offers around 25 miles (40 km) of hiking and biking routes, along with campsites for tents, trailers, and platforms.
Workers from the Civilian Conservation Corps built a stone lookout tower in the 1930s, created the lake, and laid out many paths. These facilities formed the foundation for today's park.
The name refers to a puzzling stone structure on the summit, built around 1500 years ago and probably used during ceremonies. Visitors today follow paths to this ancient wall and see the gaps between the stacked rocks that may once have served as entryways.
The trails run through forest and over rocky sections, so sturdy footwear helps on uneven ground. Campers find sites with different setups, from simple tent spots to paved pads for larger vehicles.
Cherokee legends mention mysterious people with pale eyes who supposedly built the ancient wall. Other accounts connect the structure to a Welsh seafarer from the 12th century.
