Garden Bowl, Historic bowling alley in Midtown Detroit, United States.
Garden Bowl is a bowling alley with sixteen lanes located in a historic building on Woodward Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. It sits within a larger entertainment complex and retains much of the interior look it had in the early 20th century.
The bowling alley opened in the late 19th century, making it one of the oldest continuously operating lanes in the United States. In the 1930s, the front section of the building was removed to allow Woodward Avenue to be widened.
The name "Garden Bowl" recalls the gardens that once lined Woodward Avenue and gave the neighborhood its character. The lanes attract a mix of locals and visitors who come for the social side of the game as much as the game itself.
Garden Bowl shares its building with other entertainment venues, so it is easy to combine a visit with other activities in the same spot. Evenings and weekends tend to draw larger groups, so booking lanes ahead of time is a good idea.
Garden Bowl is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which is rare for a working bowling alley. The listing recognizes that the building has kept its original use through more than a century of urban change around it.
