General Butler State Resort Park, State park in Carroll County, Kentucky, US
General Butler State Resort Park is a state park covering 791 acres of woods where the Kentucky River meets the Ohio River in northern Kentucky. The grounds include a lodge, cabins, camping areas, over five miles of trails, and Butler Lake where visitors can rent boats.
The park takes its name from General William Orlando Butler, who earned recognition serving in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War. These conflicts shaped the early development of the United States and the general's military career.
The Butler-Turpin House displays furniture and documents from the 1800s, showing how wealthy Kentucky families lived during that era. Visitors can see the rooms where people spent their daily lives and understand their domestic customs.
The park is best explored by arriving early to tackle the trails or paddle on the lake. The paths vary in difficulty, so both casual walkers and experienced hikers can find routes that suit their abilities.
From 1981 to 1998, the park operated Ski Butler, a winter sports facility that brought alpine skiing to this part of Kentucky. This unexpected amenity allowed regional visitors to ski without traveling far from home.
