Milton-Madison Bridge, Truss bridge between Milton and Madison, United States.
The Milton-Madison Bridge is a truss bridge that carries vehicles and pedestrians across the Ohio River between Kentucky and Indiana. The structure spans the river with two traffic lanes and features a walkway for those on foot.
The bridge was built in 1929 and operated as a toll crossing until 1947 when the tolls were eliminated. In 2014, the entire span received a complete replacement using modern engineering methods.
The bridge forms a vital connection between rural communities in Indiana and Kentucky, supporting daily transportation needs for residents of both states.
The crossing handles roughly 10,000 vehicles daily and connects US Route 421 on both sides. Pedestrians can walk across but should be aware this is an active roadway with regular traffic.
The 2014 rebuild was remarkable because engineers moved the entire new structure sideways into place, a technique that allowed the new bridge to be installed with minimal traffic disruption. This innovative approach meant the crossing remained partially usable during much of the replacement work.
